Driver Breaks in the SafeSite app

The SafeSite break feature allows project teams to monitor and prompt drivers to take their breaks in accordance with the Standard or Basic Fatigue Management schedules.

When the SafeSite break feature is enabled, drivers will receive prompts and reminders about their break requirements throughout their shift on the SafeSite Driver page. The break feature is enabled via the sign-on profile that is assigned to a plant chargeable item.

Plant item code with Default Sign-on Profile

The following fields, found in the sign-on control tab of a plant sign-on profile, control which break prompts are available to a driver in the SafeSite app:

Sign-on Profile with Breaks Feature controls enabled

  • Driver breaks Yes/No

Yes: Display and record driver breaks on the Driver page in SafeSite, according to the Standard or Basic Fatigue Management break schedule set for a driver.

No: Driver records their breaks externally to SafeSite. No break information will be displayed in the Driver page in SafeSite.

  • Driver break prompt Yes/No

Yes: SafeSite will prompt driver to start or stop breaks.

No: No prompts to start or stop breaks.

  • Drive time Yes/No

Yes: Estimated drive time to destination is displayed in the Driver page in SafeSite.

No: Estimated drive time is not displayed.

NOTE: This control is not related to breaks but displays on the SafeSite Driver page.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Driver SafeSite position tracking must be enabled for any driver break prompts and estimated drive times to occur.

The SafeSite Break Feature for Drivers

When a driver selects a plant item code (chargeable item) in their SafeSite docket, the controls applied to that chargeable item will dictate how their breaks are managed in the SafeSite app. If the Driver Breaks and Driver break prompt controls in the item sign-on profile are enabled, drivers will be prompted about their breaks in the SafeSite Drivers page.

A driver will be prompted about their breaks in the following scenarios:

Driver Cancels a Break

If a driver has started a break, they are able to cancel it as long as they do so before the minimum break period has elapsed (15 minutes).

If they have been on a break for 15 minutes or longer and decide to cancel it, they need to press finish then select Cancel Break in the break length dialog.

To cancel a break shorter than 15 minutes, the driver will:

  • Press the Cancel button
  • Confirm they want to cancel the break

In doing so, the break will be cancelled and the elapsed time taken will not count towards the driver's break accumulations for the day.

View Cancelled Breaks in the Virtual Super

Cancelled breaks will show in the Events Page of the Virtual Super using the label Break Cancelled.

Cancelled breaks will have duration of 0 minutes so that they do not count towards the driver's accumulated breaks for the shift.

Driver takes a break and forgets to press start

SafeSite will detect when a driver has been stationary for 15 minutes. Shortly thereafter, they will be asked if they are on a break.

  • Driver answers Yes - their break will start accumulating at the time they were detected as being stationary.
  • When they press finish, they will be required to enter the break length. They will also have the option to cancel the break by pressing the cancel break button.

IMPORTANT: SafeSite provides break length options in 15-minute increments based on the duration a driver has been detected as stationary. For instance, if SafeSite registers that a driver has been stationary for 10 minutes, only the cancel break option will be available. However, if the driver has been stationary for 36 minutes, the available options will be cancel break, 15-minutes, 30-minutes.

  • Driver answers No - the prompt will disappear.
  • They will be prompted again if they are still stationary in 5 minutes.

Driver takes a break and forgets to press finish

SafeSite will detect when a driver starts a break and forgets to press finish.

  • When they do press finish they will be required to select or manually enter the break length. The number of minutes entered will count towards their accumulated breaks for the shift.

IMPORTANT: SafeSite provides break length options in 15-minute increments based on the duration since the driver started their break. For instance, if SafeSite registers that a driver started their break 10 minutes ago, only the cancel break option will be available. However, if the driver started their break 40 minutes ago, the available options will be cancel break, 15-minutes, 30-minutes.

Driver starts a break and is detected moving

If a driver starts a break and is then detected moving, they will be prompted to confirm if they have finished their break.

  • Driver answers Yes before 15 minutes of break time has elapsed - they will only have the option to select cancel break.

  • Driver answers Yes and has already taken 15 minutes (or more) of break time - the break will finish. They will be prompted to select or manually enter how long their break was.

IMPORTANT: SafeSite provides break length options in 15-minute increments based on the duration since the driver started their break. For instance, if SafeSite registers that a driver started their break 10 minutes ago, only the cancel break option will be available. However, if the driver started their break 33 minutes ago, the available options will be cancel break, 15-minutes, 30-minutes, as shown below.

  • Driver answers No - the break will continue.

NOTE: Where a driver is detected moving on a break, it is not the distance they travel that is recorded, it is the distance between the break start and break finish location. For example, if a driver starts a break, goes for a walk, returns to their truck and finishes their break - no break violation will be triggered. If they start a break, drive to another location then finish their break - a break violation will be triggered.

Driver's Break is Overdue

If a driver does not take a break before the time outlined in the Next Break Before portion of the Driver page, a warning message will prompt them to start a break.

When they press Start, a break will be registered and start accumulating towards their daily break count.
